Message from the Editor: 

This third issue of al-Sidrah shows that the approach of the Islamic intellectual tradition has always been one of active engagement with the realities of one’s time and place. From al-Karajiki’s medieval theology to contemporary discussions of artificial intelligence, these pages show how a living tradition can bring classical wisdom to modern realities.

Sayyid Muneer al-Khabbaz’s exploration of the role of artificial intelligence in the future of Islam reflects a profound realisation that the directive from the Prophet’s Household (as) to “revive our cause” requires us to creatively apply the latest technology in the service of timeless truths. This same spirit animates Dr. Mostafa Movahedifar’s work on digital humanities, in which he shows how computational methods can reveal hidden patterns in our textual heritage.

However, the human element remains central to this. Aalima Fatemah Meghji’s discussion of Banu Amin’s Makhzan al-‘Irfăn introduces us to a great scholar of the 20th century, who combined intellectual rigour with deep humility in her commentary on the Quran. 

At the same time, Shaykh Trenton Carl’s analysis of convert experiences in North America shows how the embrace of Islam involves drawing on its teachings to elevate what is beautiful in ones own background and that this demands communities equipped to support seekers beyond introductory classes; a challenge that calls for both institutional development and individual commitment. Equally, the humanitarian dimension appears powerfully in WF AID’s Fill My Cup programme, where Qur’anic teachings take tangible form in tackling childhood hunger in East Africa.

Whether it is communal prayers, commercial ethics, or theological foundations, this issue reflects our commitment to presenting Islamic scholarship as a living tradition—one that draws on classical sources while engaging with contemporary realities. Our goal remains constant: cultivating communities equipped to serve as witnesses to divine truth in their particular time and place.
